So let’s get right down to it with the man of the month…

Artist Spotlight: Chadley

Putting the meow! in nerdcore…

Born into a family of classic rock fans in which hip hop was “kinda voodoo,” the only exposure to hip hop young Bradley McCue received was some Eminem at a neighbour’s house and the music of MadHatter and <a href"http://scrubclubrecords.com/">Scrub Club Records that his friend Colby (better known now as Jesus H Macy) discovered through their mutual interest in The Angry Video Game Nerd, whose James Rolfe appeared in Hatter’s “Overheat” video. It finally took the musical recommendation of Kabuto the Python from Colby during a bus trip from their hometown of Cranbrook, BC to Seattle, WA for him to embrace nerdcore. Once hooked, Bradley delved deeper into nerdcore and hip hop, scouring the internet for whatever he could find.

Of course, it was inevitable he would eventually stumble across Rhyme Torrents – in 2009, to be exact. Adopting a nickname given to him by friends at school, Chadley was inspired to try his hand at rapping, but after a few months he decide he wasn’t very good and gave up for almost two years. However, a bad breakup early in 2011 drove him to return to writing as an outlet for his emotions, and spite drove him to record his hate poetry as raps and send them to her. In the process, he also posted them online and used the feedback to improve until he felt more inclined to rap about things other than his hate for his ex-girlfriend. After two years honing his skills in the public forum with online battles and song competitions, as well as a few scrapped projects and live shows, Chadley has finally released his debut album, Rappin’ In the Rain, a 13-song combo of his best from this period with some brand news ones recorded specifically for the album. And it isn’t nearly as emo as the cover would suggest, although the album definitely does demonstrate a more serious side to Chadley that may surprise a few.

For the less serious side, there’s always Nerdcore Meow, the very funny talk radio-style podcast he co-produces and co-hosts alongside friends Jesus H Macy and Beaker. They are joined for both the regular segments and a Q&A by a different special guest each episode, often drawing from the best names in nerdcore. In the four seasons they have completed since starting the show at the end of 2011, Nerdcore Meow has featured nerdcore legends like MC Frontalot, YTCracker, Random, MC Lars, Schaffer the Darklord, Kabuto the Python, and the list goes on. And to hear Chadley talk, there’s virtually no end in sight, either.

Read on to find out not only who Chadley hopes to have on as future Nerdcore Meow guests, but also how the show started, who his favourite guest has been, the shameful origins of his rap name (well, the “J. Fox” part, anyway), and how he picked the songs to appear on his first album, along with all the other obligatory promo that goes with the release of a new album. So let’s get right down to it…

How did you get the name Chadley? And what’s with the “J. Fox”?
The name Chadley was actually something my friends came up with in middle school to piss me off. I always wanted a nickname, but they noticed the name Bradley rhymes with Chadley so they started calling me [that] because they thought it was pissing me off, when in reality I was relishing the idea of been crowned with a nickname. I started using Chadley as my persona for anything on the internet, mainly to keep my real identity a secret (although now, lots of people know my actual name). The reason that my internet persona ends with “J. Fox” is one of my darkest secrets, ‘cause to explain the origin I have to expose the existence of a really messed up song I wrote but never recorded. When I decided to sign up for a MySpace page for my music … I had to make a new email address. I wanted it to be memorable with no numbers or underscores, so I had to come up with something clever. At the time, I was writing a very controversial song that was never actually released entitled “Because Of Parkinsons” and it was a rap about all the things that Michael J. Fox can’t do in his day to day life because of his struggle with Parkinsons. I wrote this as a comedy piece, but you can probably see why I didn’t ever release it. At the time, I thought the song would be a big hit for me, so I made my email “chadleyjfox” after Michael J. Fox so everyone would remember the song that I thought would be so successful, but the “J. Fox” just stuck regardless, and it haunts my wary soul every day.

You’ve been releasing tracks for a few years. Why so long for the debut album?
I wasn’t good enough. I planned other albums, some I even completed, but after listening to them I decided that it would be best to just scrap it. I wanted my initial release to be something I was proud of, and my earlier projects just didn’t make the cut. I finished an entire eight track album entitled Utter Noise which had songs like “Keep My Head Up” and “Ego,” which I ended up putting up on SoundCloud, as well as songs I just ended up scrapping altogether, like “Fantasy,” “Long Gone” and “Tired As Shit”. I don’t even have those songs anymore, so nobody will ever hear them, which is probably for the better.

How did you decide which songs to include?
This was a more difficult process than one would think, honestly. The only songs I actually made knowing full well they’d be included were “Intro,” “Rappin’ In The Rain” and “Clear Skies”. I actually ended up making about 18 songs for this and then narrowed it down to 13 later. I released the track “Butthole Pleasures” months before the release of Rappin’ In The Rain, thinking it would be the first single from the album, but scrapped the idea when I decided to give the album a more serious tone. The other four songs were either too silly or the raps weren’t good enough. One of the songs was a collab with Strange 2ruth that I just never completely finished, and I hope to [do so] for my next project to show love for local hip hop in Canada.

Is there any meaning to the title or is it simply a play on Singing In the Rain?
Initially it was a temporary title. I had done two or so untitled albums that I gave up on because of lack of commitment to the projects. One day, I flipped through a book of 501 Movies to Watch Before You Die trying to find a good movie title to make a recognizable title out of. I flipped to the Singing in the Rain page and it became Rappin’ In The Rain. Although it was originally a joke, in my mind it became a metaphor. My music has received very poor reception in the past, and even with people criticizing and telling me to stop making music, I pushed through the “rain”. The title symbolizes hope for any up and coming artists, of any kind, to keep doing what you love to do no matter how people perceive it. It was important to me that the final song of the album symbolized clarity in my conscious. I’m here to stay now, whether people like it or not.

What’s up with the release of new songs “Assemble” and “Significant Link”? A 13-track album isn’t good enough for your fans?
There are a few reasons that these two tracks happened. The first and most important is that hip hop never stops. I didn’t want to stop just because I released the album. I want to continue pushing as much material as possible. The more content you have on the web, the easier it is for people to discover you. I greatly admire Adam WarRock, and although I don’t think I could ever release as much music as he does, I would love to share his love for the game and his drive to be constantly making new music. The second reason was because I had a month off of work and school. I spent most of the month putting the final touches on the album, but when all was said and done, I couldn’t just sit down and relax. I was motivated to push new material. I watched The Avengers with my girlfriend one night, went home and immediately started writing down lines for an Avengers-themed song. Before I knew it “Assemble” was complete and I had already sent out press copies of the mixtape so it was too late to include it. So I released [it] just as a single. “Significant Link” is a little different. I wanted to keep moving as I already stated, so I used my Facebook page and asked fans what they wanted to hear me rap about. I got about 11 responses or so, but the very first request was for a Zelda song. I’ve been a huge fan of the series (not including Skyward Sword) and I had never written a song about the games so I whipped one up and put it out as quickly as possible. So putting out new music has become imperative for me and trust me when I say there’s much more to come.

For those who aren’t familiar with your music, what song or songs would you recommend they check?
It all depends on your taste. If you are a fan of hip hop, the first song you should hear is “Die Hard,” which is about a night of partying and drunken misadventures, and then ease yourself into the more nerdy stuff slowly. But if you are a person looking for super nerdy music, my personal favourites are “Hero In A Half Shell” about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and “Assemble,” which is about the final fight scene in The Avengers.

You’re also one of the founders and hosts of the podcast Nerdcore Meow. How did you meet the rest of the Nerdcore Meow gang and end up doing a podcast together?
Colby (aka Jesus H Macy) and I have been friends since we were 12 years old and have constantly tried to find new ways to become internet famous. We tried to be film makers in 9th grade and started a video game-reviewing YouTube channel called “Casual Vest Guys” that we both eventually lost interest in. Two years later we both opened up our own individual websites, Comedically Witty (which still operates) and Plasma Station (which does not), and after doing “The Comedically Witty Podcast” and the “Plasma’d Podcast” we both decided to pool our talents to create Nerdcore Meow. The first season was just Colby and me and contained eight episodes. I had met Beaker on Nerdcore Now and after Season 1, Colby and I had planned to cease production of Nerdcore Meow, but Beaker approached me about possibly joining the cast for Season 2. We all decided that we could take this farther and continued the show, which has just finished its fourth season

Chadley J Fawkes

Who came up with the name Nerdcore Meow?
Nerdcore Meow was a name created by Colby about a month and a half before the release of the first episode. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when Colby texted me with the name. I was at a local Blockbuster checking out the damage done by someone who had driven into the front of the store (which turned out to have been my girlfriend two months before I even met her) and he had no idea what he was going to do with it, but he bought the domain NerdcoreMeow.com. [After] about three weeks he came up with the idea of a nerdcore-themed podcast.

What are you trying to accomplish with Nerdcore Meow? Is there any kind of Prime Directive?
I don’t want to speak for the whole team, but my objective is to expand people’s knowledge on nerdcore and the audience for the genre in general. If somebody listened to our show to hear AdamWarRock, heard a song by Dr Awkward and became a fan of Doc, then I’ve done my job.

You’ve done a lot of episodes of the show. That’s a lot of guests. How do you find so many guests with such frequency?
Ha ha. Trust me, it’s getting much harder, but we try not to draw a distinct line on who we think is and isn’t nerdcore. If somebody has come out saying that they’re not nerdcore, we’ll still interview them if we get the opportunity. In that respect, there are hundreds and hundreds of more artists we can interview to spread knowledge. If we get a hip hop artist that worked with Random a couple of times, that opens up all of his audience that might not have heard of nerdcore. It is getting harder to get guests for the show but we still manage to pull as many strings as possible to have new episodes.

So who would you like to have on Nerdcore Meow that you haven’t yet?
You could just assume we’ve had everyone on already, but that’s so far from the truth. There’s a lot of people I really want to hear from for Season 5, the biggest one being ZealouS1. I want to get into his head so bad and speak on Bossfights, his relationship with Dr. Awkward, his solo work and his current plans. Other artists I want to interview include people like Stevie D of The Illbotz, Kyle Stevens of Kirby Krackle, Ghettosocks, Timbuktu, Chokeules, Savillion, Benajmain Bear, Packy Lundholm of I Fight Dragons, Richie Branson, More Or Les, Former Fat Boys, Soup Or Villainz, and the list goes on. So we’re not even close to having a shortage of people we want to interview. Nerdcore is much bigger than people give it credit for.

You’ve had a lot of important names in nerdcore on the show. Who has been your favourite(s) to have on? Were there any that surprised you in how easy (or hard) they were to interview?
I don’t really like to play favourites but today I am gonna go ahead and say my favourite person we’ve ever had on the show is Lex Lingo, formerly known as Sketch. He is very relaxed and willing to talk about his new stuff in an exciting way. He also is very good at playing off of Colby, Beaker and myself to make an entertaining episode. Would have that guy back on any day. As far as people I’ve been surprised by, a lot of these guys are a little nervous at first but then relax after a few minutes, so every guest is both difficult and easy to interview. The faster we can get the guest to relax, the better the episode. Beaker is really good at making the guests feel at ease, and we play off of each other, almost strategically, in that way.

What’s up next for Chadley? Have you started working on a sophomore album yet?
I’m actually working on a few different projects at the moment. I don’t want to give away a whole lot, but I can definitely touch on the remix album I am currently planning for Rappin’ In The Rain entitled Remixed In The Rain. I don’t want to say which producers are gonna be on that quite yet, but trust me when I say that I’ve got some great guys lined up. Another project that’s under way is my next album with producer Stone. It’s gonna be eight to 10 tracks and all the beats will be based on SNES samples. Other than that, I’ve been thinking about starting on my second mixtape, but it’s just a thought with nothing behind it at the moment.

Two thumbs up for Tigger Wear

Anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you so much for the interview, and I hope that more artists emerge. Everyone always says that there are too many rappers and not enough fans, but I disagree. People are gonna do what they are gonna do. If you are a rapper, then you’re obviously a fan of rap, so if someone wants to try out something they are passionate about, then power to them.

What to Hear:

Chadley – “Assemble” [single]

Recorded too late to be released on debut album Rappin’ In The Rain, and instead released solo around the same time, “Assemble” is Chadley’s attempt at putting the final battle scene from The Avengers movie into rap form. It’s a fun song with an uptempo beat, but most importantly Chadley does a very fine job at delivering the story. “Assemble” is a solid companion piece to Ripynt’s “Avengers Assembled” for a one-two punch of The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, from pre-release anticipation to climatic conclusion.

Chadley – Rappin’ In the Rain [album]

For his debut album, Chadley combines 13 of his best tracks, a mix of brand new and previously released. The delivery can sometimes be a little rushed or mumbled, but songs like “#Famous” demonstrate what to expect as he masters a fast rap style. And while the title is a little corny, the hook for the title track is too damn infectious for its own good, so it’s hard to hate. The album sticks mostly to the serious side of Chadley – in other words, no “Butthole Pleasures” on this one – with songs about love (“Strange Superstition”) and hope (“Change” and “Clear Skies”), but he also lets his geek flag fly with songs about TMNT (“Hero in a Half Shell”), zombies (“Left 4 Dead”), and a battle between Mario and Link (“The Showdown”). Guests include Fatback Supreme, ET and M.I.S.F.I.T.

A remixed version of this song surfaced last year, a cross-boarder collaboration between Charlotte, NC’s Sulfur and Cloud City, Saskatchewan’s The Garthim-Master (now going by Rift), each with an extra verse plus an original spacey beat by the latter. It appeared in truncated form on Grandpa Funnybook’s Mix-Tapingly Arranged Rapping Song Album 2: Dyadic Dynamite! and the full version was available on the Secretcloud Bandcamp until recently. The original version – recorded over the trap instrumental to Baby’s “What Happened To That Boy” featuring Clipse, with additional verses from Suflur’s ThoughtCriminals’ partner Shane Hall and Backburner’s Jesse Dangerously – is now available on Sulfur’s new mixtape, Srsface: Volume 2. Rift and Jesse Dangerously may be the only two Canadians on this mixtape, but don’t hold that against Sulfur and just pick up the full mixtape while you’re at it.

Artist Spotlight: Chokeules

For those who may not be familiar with Chokeules, he’s a witty Canadian rapper with a heavy emphasis on wordplay and humour. He’s also one third of b-movie-themed rap group Swamp Thing, part of the cross-Canada crew Backburner (who count nerdcore-friendly rappers Jesse Dangerously, Wordburglar, More Or Les and Ghettosocks among their number), a founding member of Toolshed and a solo artist in his own right.
Long before he adopted the name Choke, Justine Lepine was exposed to hip hop through friends at his London, Ontario elementary school, but it was his father who would provide him with his first rap tapes, the Fat Boys’ Crushin’ and the Beastie Boys’ Licensed to Ill. Like his friends at school, now young Justin could now show off his “bad language” skills too, even getting suspended from the school bus for rapping Fat Boys lyrics to a lady walking her dog. At H.B. Beal Secondary School he gravitated toward graffiti and freestyling, adopting the name Chokeules and rapping with the likes of Timbuktu, Psybo, Self Help and Thesis Sahib. When Timbuktu started to get serious about production around 1996, The Toolshed studio was born. Tim, Psybo and Choke released their self-titled debut as Toolshed in 2000, and Choke followed a year later with his first solo album, a cassette called Clockwork Awkward. In 2001 they were welcomed on the Backburner tour thanks to Thesis, who had joined the predominantly Halifax-based crew when he moved out there to attend art school. An offer to join the crew soon followed, and was of course accepted. More self-released Toolshed albums followed: Schemata in 2002, Illustrated in 2003 and Relapse in 2006.

Unfortunately, after recording material in 2006/07 for a new album Psybo relocated to British Colombia, making the creation of new Toolshed music difficult. The three members started work on solo records instead, with Choke dropping Hypergraphia in 2009 (Timbuktu’s Stranger Danger followed in 2010 while Psybo’s untitled album still sits in a vault). A new Toolshed album, The Lost, dropped in 2011, compiled from those final recording sessions plus a few upgrades and new tracks, as did Backburner’s Heatwave, which Chokeules was all over, not only contributing verses but also writing and recording many of the hooks. Swamp Thing, formed out of an initial one-off collaboration between Toolshed’s Chokeules and Timbuktu and producer/rapper Savilion of Toronto’s Creature Box, was the main focus of 2012, releasing both The Grindhouse EP and Creature Feature as well as a video for first single “123”. And 2013 should be even busier with another Swamp Thing album, another solo album and another Backburner album. So, before the deluge begins, let’s have a few words with the one and only Chokeules about Swamp Thing, his solo album, nerdcore and his very funny Twitter feed…

How did you get the name Choke/Chokeules?
Choke was my first tag when I started writing graffiti. I wanted something with good letters, and I liked the O in the middle. I moved on to other names, but kept Choke as a mic name. Chokeules came from my homie Reboser. There’s a movie [The Nutty Professor] where Eddie Murphy goes “Hercules! Hercules!” so Rebos flipped it to “Chokeules” and it stuck.

That’s kind of nerdy right there. However, your music as a solo artist and with Toolshed isn’t what one would usually consider nerdy, yet Swamp Thing’s theme of sci-fi and horror b-movies appeals to that audience. Would you consider Swamp Thing nerdcore?

Swamp Thing: Savilion, Chokeules, Timbuktu

I wouldn’t know how to classify it, but I’m stoked that it’s getting love from nerdcore fans. We have a lot of nerdcore homies, and I think we share many of the same qualities in our music. We’re all just making dope tracks about the shit we know and love.

How did Swamp Thing form?
For the dude, it was an accident in the laboratory during a top secret bio-engineering project. For the group, Timbuktu and I have known Savilion for years, and when we finally linked up in the studio to make a track, it went so well that we had to make an album.

Why that name? Why that theme?
The name and the concept came from that first day in the studio. Savilion was showing us beats and we were throwing different ideas around, then we struck gold. As soon as we had the name and the spark of an idea, the album figured itself out pretty quickly.

Any b-movies you wish got repped on Creature Feature but didn’t?
No, if we didn’t mention it then it’s trash.

For the posse cut “Creature Feature,” why did you choose Friday the 13th‘s Jason Voorhees?
Because he’s dope. Also, it’s a huge posse cut, so even though a slasher flick wasn’t the most obvious choice, I thought it would leave more classic b-movie options open for the guests. But mostly because he’s dope.

Your solo album was called Hypergraphia. Can you explain the significance of the title?
Hypergraphia is basically the need to write. It’s like the opposite of writer’s block, but not in a good way. I read an article about it and some of the compulsive behavior struck a chord, although I used the term in a more general sense of just writing all the time.

You’re building a pretty good following on Twitter and Facebook with your puns and jokes. Do you find social media to be a good outlet for your need to write?
Yeah, it’s all wordplay and punchlines, songs and jokes both satisfy similar creative urges. At first I stayed away from jokes online cuz I want the music to be taken seriously, but it’s just another avenue to getting your ideas out there.

What do you feel is your funniest tweet so far?
I’m not sure, that’s for future generations of scholars to argue about.

You’ve started releasing a series of videos with you and Rena doing fun parody songs. What’s up with that?
Yeah, Rena’s mad talented, and we’re good friends, so we’d talked about working together for awhile. The first song started out as a joke, but then Dan Jardine got involved and it turned into something awesome.

Hypergraphia had two videos, some of the earliest filmed and directed by Daniel Jardine, who has since worked with Wordburglar, Swamp Thing, Twin Peaks, Muneshine and D-Sisive. How did you hook up with him?
We met at the first Teenburger video shoot. Timbuktu, Ghettosocks, and the director Caley MacLennan were homies with him already, so we all hung out that day and have been working together ever since.

Wordburglar & Chokeules

What is your favourite Dan Jardine video?
They’re all great, Swamp Thing’s “123″ is my favourite he’s done with us, and Wordburglar’s “Drawings With Words” is hype.

Can you recommend a few of your songs for those who might be unfamiliar with your catalogue?
I’d recommend checking the videos for Swamp Thing’s “123” and Backburner’s “Heatwave”, then google Chokeules for solo videos.

What’s up next?
New solo album Stay Up coming soon, and we’re almost done the next Backburner album too. I’ll be doing some touring early summer with Swamp Thing to promote our album Creature Feature.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Shout out to Backburner, Swamp Thing, Hand’Solo Records, Droppin’ Science Productions, and nerdcorenow for the interview. Big ups to everyone who supports the music.
What to Hear:

Ambition – Man of the Year [EP]

He may geek out over shoes, but Ambition is still one of the least nerdy of the Backburner crew. In fact, his lyrics are filled with references to sports and – surprise, surprise! – sneakers. Yeah, it’s not nerdcore, but it’s still a fine album of smooth hip hop with production from Backburner’s Dexter Doolittle and The Extremities (aka Fresh Kils and Uncle Fester, the latter also providing all the cuts) with two tracks each, plus Relic and !llmind with one track each. The only guest vocals are from infamous Toronto rapper/producer Rich Kidd and Halifax freestyle legend Quake. Six songs. Short and smooth.

Iron Wind – The Temple [single]

Heavily influenced by Wu-Tang Clan, Iron Wind’s four-song single from his upcoming Hidden Techniques album is heavy with kung-fu references and even features West Coast Wu-affiliates Phoenix Flame (of Watts, CA crew Birdz of Prey) on “Cherry Blossom” and Eternal (of West Coast Killa Bees), who is also joined on “Born Invincible” by Darren G, together known as War Machine. Iron Wind (pka Scratch Kat) goes solo only on the opening/title track and is joined on posse cut “Warriors of Heaven & Earth” by Faction’s Primordial and Chief 4syte and I Respect Music Camp’s Specs, Mike Gutz and Robbie G. Get your kung-fu rap fix here.

Mad Dukez & Fresh Kils – The Open Affairs EP [EP]

Fresh Kils is a Juno-nominated (which makes him a Canadian) producer known for his onstage presence and a series of wonderful routines composed on his MPC with samples from Transformers, A-Team, Double Dragon and The Price Is Right. Mad Dukez is an up-and-coming rapper from Buffalo, NY. The two are collaborating on a conceptual album inspired by The Great Gatsby, but in the meantime the cross-boarder duo hold off its release for a little longer with a second EP together, this one a little smoother and more polished. And also way less nerdy than their slightly Halloween-themed Monsters EP or what one would presume we’ll get with the Gatsby album.

Wordburglar – “Letter From Snake Eyes” (parts 1 and 2) b/w “Rap-Viper” [triple single]

To build buzz for his upcoming G.I. Joe-themed rap album, Backburner’s Wordburglar drops this triple-single featuring the first two parts of introspective “Letter From Snake Eyes” (parts one and two produced by Fresh Kils and Timbuktu, respectively) and the bumping Cobra call to arms “Rap-Viper” produced by Mister E. The beats are made using samples from the cartoon, and the lyrics are rich in the Joe mythos with references made to the cartoon, the comics and the toys. The triple single is available for free, as will be the album, Welcome to Cobra Island, when it drops May 31.

I watch Anime, all the time. It’s probably my favorite TV Genre, so I decided to take a month and dedicate a few songs to some of my favorite Animes. I love Anime (In case you didn’t catch that the first time). I may even be addicted, I am in fact watching One Piece as I upload these tracks… but that’s besides the point. Rurouni Mention has songs about the following anime : Naruto, Bleach, Hitman Reborn, Akira, Pokemon and several more. There will be a second volume also. Make sure you check out my youtube (user creativemindframe) and www.facebook.com/creativemindframe Album: 1-UP – Rurouni Mention : The Anime Slayer

The post Album: 1-UP – Rurouni Mention : The Anime Slayer appeared first on Nerdcore Now.

While many of today’s superstar rappers seem to put great value on autonomy, hip-hop was borne in community. Poverty, hard life, tight families, and close-knit neighborhoods were ubiquitous in the culture that invented hip-hop, and that legacy is felt to this day. Even as the pendulum begins to leave the opposite end of the spectrum–with wealth, club clout, and self-centrism having replaced poverty, street cred, and community–the influence of those originating factors still permeate to this day. From block parties and the Zulu Nation to cyphers and collaborations, it has always more about an ”us” than an “I.” Growing out of this fact, crews have been an important part of hip-hop throughout its existence. In this series I will examine some of the more influential rap crews there have been. For some, this will be an introduction to some of these collectives, for others a new insight into the history of some of their favorite crews. I am in contact with many folks getting interviews for this series and the coverage will include a diverse roster. Old skool, underground, and nerdcore will all be featured with a full article dedicated to each crew.
